The decision to set the story in 1965 Oxford gave the production a period grammar distinct from the Morse and Lewis series that preceded it: the texture is late Sixties grammar schools and provincial crime scenes, shot with attentive craft by Mammoth Screen. Critics who had been sceptical of another prequel were largely won over by Evans - his Morse is recognisably the future curmudgeon but not yet calcified.
